By City
Gold rates carry a small genuine regional variance — Karachi is the Sarafa benchmark origin, and remote regions carry a modest logistics premium.
* City variance reflects transport/logistics cost from Karachi Sarafa. Making charges vary further by individual jeweller. Always request a bill separating metal cost from making charges.

Market Fundamentals
Pakistan's gold rate is not set in isolation — it is the product of three interconnected forces that interact every trading day.
Gold is a globally traded commodity priced in US dollars per troy ounce. When the international spot price rises or falls, Pakistan's Sarafa Association adjusts the local rate on the following morning's bulletin. In 2025–2026, XAU/USD reached an all-time high above $5,000 per ounce before correcting — still historically elevated, which directly sets the floor for Pakistan's current tola prices.
Because international gold is priced in dollars, every movement in the rupee against the dollar amplifies or dampens the local gold rate. Since 2021, the Pakistani rupee has lost roughly 60% of its value against the dollar. This PKR depreciation is the single biggest structural reason why gold in Pakistan now costs over Rs 4,00,000 per tola. For Pakistani savers, gold has historically been the most reliable hedge against rupee devaluation.
The Karachi Sarafa Bazaar publishes the official local benchmark rate each morning. All major cities — Lahore, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Peshawar, Faisalabad, Multan, Quetta — adopt this rate as their standard. The Sarafa rate typically carries a local premium of Rs 2,000–8,000 per tola above the pure international spot equivalent.
Pakistan has two distinct gold demand peaks: the October–December wedding season (heaviest jewellery buying) and the pre-Eid period. During Muharram, gold markets slow significantly as weddings pause across the country.
Gold Purity
Karat measures the proportion of pure gold in an alloy. In Pakistan, jewellery is predominantly 22K while investment gold bars are 24K.
| Karat | Hallmark | Purity | Visual | Common Use in Pakistan |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 24K | 999 | 99.9% | Gold bars & investment — too soft for jewellery | |
| 22K | 916 | 91.7% | Mainstream jewellery — bridal sets, bangles, necklaces | |
| 21K | 875 | 87.5% | Daily-wear jewellery, Gulf-influenced market standard | |
| 18K | 750 | 75.0% | Studded jewellery & rings — higher durability |
Jewellery Buyer's Guide
Understanding Pakistan's traditional gold weight units — and the jeweller's deduction system called kat — can save you thousands of rupees.
When you sell gold jewellery, the jeweller applies a deduction called kat — a per-masha adjustment that accounts for the copper or silver alloy mixed into the gold, polish, and non-gold elements.
